Tripurantakam

Tripurantakam is a village and mandal in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Tripurantakam is located at a distance of 40 km from its nearest towns Markapur & Vinukonda, 93 km from Ongole and around 150 km from Vijayawada. It is on Guntur – Srisailam route. A famous temple dedicated to Sri Tripurantakeswara Swamy is located here. The temple is on the top of a hill. It is considered to be the Eastern gateway to the famous Srisailam temple. Goddess Sri Bala Tripura Sundari is located down the hill, in the midst of a tank [ cheruvu]. Goddess Sri Bala Tripura Sundari deity & her temple complex here lies in the middle of water when the Tripurantakam tank is full or half full. A Srichakram is present here. There is a legend about the temple of Tripurantakam. Lord Shiva killed demons called Thripurasuras with the help of Goddess Sri Bala Tripura Sundari at this place. Shivaratri & Navaratri festivals are very famous here with people from the surrounding districts visiting this temple. All buses running between Vijayawada-Kurnool, Vijayawada – Kadapa, Tenali – Erragondapalem, Guntur – srisailam travel via Tripurantakam. There is a secret underground passage to srisailam from the temple premises. Below the hill in a pond there is a temple called Bala Thripura Sundari devi. Tripurantaka Bala Tripurasundari Devi (swayambhu) is the first incarnation of Adiparasakthi. Here she is in the form of a little Girl. she helped Lord shiva in destruction of Tripuras and Tripurasuras. Tripuranthakam is considered as eastern gateway of Srisailam. This was developed by Chalukyan kings in 11th century, and is evident in the inscriptions found at the temple. On either sides of sanctum sanctorum we find the sculptures of Bhadra and Anubhadra carved on the wall. On the northern side of the temple, there is an opening, which is believed to be a tunnel to Srisailam. There is also a temple for Veerabhadreshwara but unfortunately the head of the idol was destroyed by religious fanatics long ago. Bala Tripurasundari temple is located downhill about 2 kms away from Tripurantakeshwara temple. Devi temple is located amidst a tank and during rainy days, temple is surrounded by water. The sanctum sanctorum of Bala Tripurasundari is slightly under ground and the local priest says that on the back of devi’s idol, Beeja mantra (seed syllable) is engraved. Since public are not allowed in the sanctum, we will have to depend on the words of the priest. The temple also has a Sri Chakra in the Sanctum. In the temple passage, there are plenty of excavated statues of Goddess Chinnamasta and other yoginis. Local priest and also people offer worship to these idols regularly.
